What hydro jetting does that a cable cannot
A drain cable punches a hole through a clog. It leaves the grease, scale and sludge on the pipe wall, which is why the line often clogs again within weeks.
Hydro jetting sends water through a hose and a nozzle at high pressure, with jets that spin and scour the full circumference of the pipe. The result is a line scrubbed back toward its original diameter, so a 4-inch drain flows like a 4-inch drain again.
When a clogged line needs jetting right now
A single slow drain does not need a jetter. These signs usually do:
- A main line that backs up again within weeks of being snaked
- A restaurant or commercial kitchen line packed with grease
- Roots that grow back into the line every season
- Scale and sludge from decades of use in an older house
- Sewage reaching a floor drain with the cable stopped by heavy buildup
Line backed up for the second time this month?
Our line is answered 24/7. Call and we will work out whether jetting is the right tool.
Snaking versus hydro jetting
Both clear a clog. They are not interchangeable, and a good plumber picks the tool from what is in the pipe.
| Compared | Drain cable | Hydro jetter |
|---|---|---|
| Works well on | Soft clogs and a single blockage | Grease, scale, sludge and root hairs |
| Leaves behind | Coating on the pipe wall | A clean pipe wall |
| Reach | 50 to 100 feet in a main line | Long runs from a cleanout |
| Risks | Can punch through weak pipe | Wrong pressure on damaged pipe can worsen it |
| Best for | A fast fix for a first clog | Repeat clogs and heavy buildup |
For a first-time clog in a sink or tub, drain cleaning with a cable is usually the right tool.
What to expect on a jetting visit
The visit follows a short order, and the camera decides whether we jet at all.
- 1
Camera first
A camera shows what is in the line and whether the pipe can take pressure.
- 2
Set up at the cleanout
We feed the hose through a cleanout or a pulled toilet, not through the wall.
- 3
Jet the line
The nozzle works forward to cut the blockage, then back to scour the wall.
- 4
Check with the camera
A second pass shows the result and any damage the buildup was hiding.
- 5
Talk through the findings
If the pipe is cracked or collapsed, we explain what that means for repair.
When hydro jetting is not the answer
Jetting is a cleaning tool. It cannot rebuild a pipe that has failed.
Jetting will not help when
- The pipe is collapsed or badly offset
- The line is Orangeburg or heavily deteriorated
- A tree root has pushed through a broken joint
- A solid object, not buildup, is the blockage
What we recommend instead
- A camera to see the damage
- Lining or replacement under sewer line repair
- Cutting out roots and repairing the joint
- Retrieving the object or pulling the toilet
If the camera finds broken pipe, we will point you to sewer line repair rather than jet a line that cannot hold.
Grease traps and storm drains
Restaurants and small commercial buildings bring two more questions.
Grease trap lines
Jetting clears the drain lines that run to and from a trap, where fat hardens. Pumping out the tank of the trap itself is a separate service, so ask us on the call what is in scope for your site.
Storm drains
We can jet a private storm line on your property when roots or silt block it. Anything dumped into a public storm drain should be reported to Midvale Public Works at 801-567-7235.
Preventive schedule
A kitchen line that is jetted before it backs up costs less than a Saturday dinner service lost to sewage.
Property managers
If you manage a building, give us access details and the unit affected, and we will work from your work order.
Older lines and who owns the pipe
Midvale's historic downtown and Old Town streets date to the mining and railroad era, and older drain pipe there is more likely to be clay or cast iron with scale built up on the walls. That is exactly the case where a camera comes first, since a thin or cracked pipe may not take pressure.
The lateral from your building to the main typically belongs to the property owner, and four sewer districts serve different parts of town. If the blockage is in the main in the street, jetting your line will not help, and we will say so after the camera pass.
What affects the cost of hydro jetting
A clean 30-foot run is a lot different from 100 feet of grease-packed commercial line.
Insurance rarely covers cleaning. If sewage reached your floors, ask your agent about water backup coverage and keep photos.
Related services
If you want ongoing maintenance after a jetting visit, sewer line cleaning on a schedule keeps buildup from returning. A sewer inspection before buying a home shows the condition of the pipe before it becomes your problem. We also serve nearby customers across the south border, and the Sandy plumbing page explains where.
Where this guidance comes from
Jetting guidelines depend on pipe material and condition, and drain sizes follow the International Plumbing Code (IPC). We use a camera first when a line's condition is unclear.
Hydro jetting questions from Midvale property owners
Yes. The line is answered 24/7, including nights and holidays. We book same-day appointments when available and give you a clear price before work starts.
On sound pipe, no. On pipe that is cracked, collapsed or badly corroded, high pressure can make damage worse. That is why we camera the line first and set the pressure to match.
If the line clogs again within weeks of a cable, or you have grease or scale buildup, jetting is the better fit. A first clog in a single fixture usually needs only a cable.
It clears root hairs and softer growth. Thick roots that have pushed through a joint usually need cutting and a pipe repair.
We can clear the drain lines connected to a grease trap. Pumping out the trap tank is a separate service, so tell us what you need on the call.
Often yes at a controlled pressure, but we look at the pipe with a camera first. Thin or flaking cast iron may need repair instead.
We can clear a private storm line on your property. Report spills or illegal discharge into a public storm drain to Midvale Public Works at 801-567-7235.
